The opening session of Ecosocialism 2026 features Brazilian ecosocialist Sabrina Fernandes (in person), Scotland-based Cuba expert Helen Yaffe (via video link), and Indian communist N Sai Balaji (in person).
They will be speaking up against the naked imperial aggression of the Trump regime in the United States which has kidnapped the Venezuelan president and his wife, launched an unprovoked war against Iran, and is tightening a stranglehold blockade against Cuba, amongst other threats.
Challenging this imperialism is an integral part of breaking the Australian government alliance with the USA and fighting for a better world.
This session will introduce all the themes of Ecosocialism 2026 - resistance, decolonisation and liberation - which will be drawn out through the rest of the weekend.
Conference registration will be open on site from 4pm.

Helen Yaffe (Scotland)
Helen Yaffe is Professor of Latin American Political Economy at the University of Glasgow. Her teaching focuses on Cuban and Latin American history and development.
Sabrina Fernandes (Brazil)
Sabrina Fernandes is a political economist and ecosocialist activist from Brazil.
