Australia is purchasing eight nuclear powered submarines under the aggressive AUKUS military pact at a cost of at least $368 billion. It is the single biggest expenditure on Australian military capacity since colonisation.
The Albanese government is beating the military drum and taking the world closer to nuclear war and environmental disaster. Meanwhile, the urgency of the fight to save our planet is at odds with the refusal of the government to take the climate action needed.
As well as promoting imperialism, militarising the Asia-Pacific and starting a new cold war with China, Labor’s AUKUS deal also opens the door to pro-nuclear lobby groups, increasing the risk of nuclear disasters.
The challenge for us today is to build a powerful, international movement against the fossil fuel industries and war machines that can force governments to address the imminence of climate apocalypse. We need to fight for justice and peace in our region supporting the Asia Pacific peoples struggling with the real threat — climate change.
